So I have an 18 month old and I really want to take her around to a few houses as her first Trick or Treating experience! I'm really excited. But because she won't be getting a ton of candy, I didn't want to buy a big bag. I wanted her to be able to hold her little bag easily so it needed to be small. I've already made too many errands to Wal-Mart, so I really didn't want to go back for one little thing. So I decided to make her one! I'm kinda not making her costume, so I figure this can make up for it. She'll still be able to use it for a few more years, right?
Tools you will need:
fabric of your choice pins scissors thread of your choice ruler iron (it helps make the sewing easier) |
First, cut out the size you want your tote to be. I did hers 22x10.5 (which is including the extra seaming space). Then press and pin the sides in so you can have nice clean lines. Sew all around it.
Second, make your color-blocked handles. The total length I made the handles was 18in. The yellow blocks were each 4.5 and the black blocks were 9in. The width was 1.5 in. Iron/press for sewing ease.
Third, sew the yellow blocks to the black.
Fourth, sew the entire strip together length-wise. Turn right-side out. Press.
Fifth, sew your handles to your tote body! I sewed over it twice for durability.
Sixth, fold tote and sew the sides together. Make sure you don't sew around the whole thing! At this point, add in your little tag on one of the sides if you'd like!
Seventh, turn it out and press. And you're done! I don't have a serger, so I didn't serge any of the sides. You are welcome to do so if you own one! It will make the inside much prettier!
